A Sponsor is a friend and mentor to a Candidate through the periods of OCIA and the Rites of Acceptance/Welcome, Election, and in the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation, they continue to encourage them through the period of Mystagogy, their first year in the Church. Sponsors are the witness to a candidate's faith, intention, and moral character. A Sponsor models for a Candidate how one practices living out the Gospel in personal and social life. They help find clarity and answers when a candidate is uncertain or has questions; they encourage them in moments of hesitation or anxiety.
As the Candidate approaches Easter and the reception of the sacraments, the Sponsor will bear witness to the church as they have observed and guided the Candidate's progress in the baptismal life they testify to the community and the Bishop that their Candidate is a sincere Disciple of Jesus Christ and is prepared to receive/complete the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist.)
